Steps
Understand that ALOA runs two separate credential tracks: the non-exam ALOA Fundamental Locksmith (AFL) training-completion credential, and the exam-based Proficiency Registration Program (PRP) ladder of CRL to CPL to CML.
To pursue the PRP ladder, start with the Mandatory Exam covering core topics such as codes, cylinder servicing, key blanks, impressioning, and basic master keying.
Pass two elective exams of choice alongside the Mandatory Exam to earn Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL), the entry-level PRP certification.
Continue by passing an additional set of electives to reach Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL).
Pass further electives beyond CPL to reach the top general-locksmithing designation, Certified Master Locksmith (CML).
Known gotchas
AFL is not a prerequisite step toward CRL — ALOA states the AFL credential does not count toward any PRP certification level, so treat it as a separate apprentice-recognition credential rather than 'rung one' of the CRL/CPL/CML ladder.
