Steps Register a free recreation.gov account and generate a RIDB API key from the RIDB developer portal. Send authenticated GET requests to the facilities endpoint at https://ridb.recreation.gov/api/v1/facilities using the apikey header. Filter results with query parameters such as state, activity, and a keyword query to narrow to campground or RV facilities. Paginate through results with offset/limit parameters since facility searches can return large result sets. Cross-reference returned FacilityID values against the campsites and media endpoints to enrich each facility record.
Known gotchas RIDB throttles requests (reported around 50 requests/minute); design batch jobs with backoff rather than tight polling loops. Facility records only cover federally managed or federally affiliated sites — private campgrounds, marinas, and most state parks are absent. Never redistribute your API key; the RIDB access agreement prohibits sharing keys or reselling access to the data.
