Steps

Obtain your Tank Utility app username and password (the same credentials used in the mobile/web app).
Send a GET request to the getToken endpoint using HTTP Basic Authentication with those credentials.
Parse the JSON response to extract the returned token string.
Include the token in the header of all subsequent API requests.
Re-request a token before it expires, since tokens are only valid for 24 hours.

Known gotchas

Tokens expire after 24 hours and must be refreshed; there is no long-lived API key.
A 401 response means the token is wrong or missing from the header, not necessarily that your credentials are invalid.
Access to a device requires the device owner to have granted your account permission; a 403 means the device isn't assigned to your account.
