Steps
Confirm the Yellow Dog Inventory Client is hosted by Yellow Dog — API access requires a Yellow Dog-hosted instance, not a self-hosted deployment.
Contact sales@yellowdogsoftware.com (or call 757-818-9360) to request API access for a new integration; Yellow Dog issues an API Agreement and Statement of Work to certify the integration before granting credentials.
Budget for Yellow Dog's monthly API access fee, which is charged per client in addition to the base software subscription.
Once certified, use the full-featured API (90+ endpoints) to pull data — e.g. adding items from an external system, retrieving purchase orders for accounts payable, or pulling accounting data — and to push updates back into Yellow Dog Inventory.
Reference the technical documentation at developer.yellowdogsoftware.com for endpoint-level details once access is granted.
If only outbound POS sales data is needed (e.g. from Arryved), note that Yellow Dog also offers a separate one-way sales file sync distinct from the full read/write API.
Known gotchas
There is no self-serve API key generation — access is gated behind a sales conversation, a signed API Agreement/SOW, and a recurring monthly access fee.
The full API requires Yellow Dog-hosted infrastructure; an on-premise-only deployment may not qualify without additional setup per Yellow Dog's on-premises API access requirements.
The one-way sales file sync (e.g. used for the Arryved POS integration) is a different, more limited mechanism than the full 90+ endpoint API — don't assume POS integrations expose the full API surface.
