Steps
Identify the project's area of interest and check 3DEP lidar coverage/quality level using the LidarExplorer web app (apps.nationalmap.gov/lidar-explorer)
Download point-cloud or derived DEM products directly, or use The National Map's map/download services for bulk or programmatic access
For very large-volume access, use the 3DEP Lidar Point Cloud AWS 'Requester Pays' bucket instead of the standard download client
Use the elevation/canopy data to plan clearing limits, drainage, and equipment access relative to slope and existing vegetation structure
Cross-reference lidar-derived canopy data with the project's IPaC and wetland-delineation findings for a unified site picture
Known gotchas
Lidar coverage, vintage, and point density vary significantly by county - some rural parcels may only have older or lower-resolution collections
3DEP data is authoritative for elevation/bare-earth terrain but is not a substitute for a ground survey or wetland delineation
Standard downloads and map services are free with no account required, but AWS Requester-Pays bulk access does incur cloud egress charges
