Access the Irish Register of Beneficial Owners (RBO) at https://rbo.gov.ie; direct API access for AML-obliged entities requires registration and approval under the Criminal Justice (Money Laundering) Act obligations
Submit a search request with the company's CRO number; the RBO returns disclosed beneficial owners including full name, nationality, country of residence, and nature and extent of interest (e.g., 'direct shareholder')
Parse the ownership percentage bands reported (e.g., 25-50%, 50-75%, 75-100%) — exact percentages are not always disclosed; treat band data accordingly in your risk scoring
Where the RBO indicates 'no beneficial owner identified' (a valid filing outcome for publicly-listed or collective investment entities), treat the company as subject to enhanced due diligence rather than flagging as non-compliant
Cross-reference the CRO company number with OpenCorporates jurisdiction code 'ie' for additional officer and filing history data
Retain a timestamped copy of each RBO query result; Irish AML regulations require obliged entities to document the source and date of UBO information
Known gotchas
The RBO does not provide a public REST API; programmatic access requires a formal agreement as an obliged entity and use of their designated search interface or a licensed data aggregator
RBO data reflects only what the company has self-reported; it is not independently verified by the CRO — treat it as a starting point, not a definitive UBO confirmation
RBO records may be 'in dispute' if a beneficial owner has formally challenged their filing; such records appear with a dispute flag and should trigger manual review
