Steps
Define the parametric trigger in the policy terms: specify the index (e.g. cumulative rainfall, windspeed, temperature departure), the measurement station or grid point, the threshold value, and the measurement period
At the end of each measurement period, query the agreed weather data source API for the index value at the specified location and period
Compare the retrieved index value against the policy trigger threshold; if the threshold is met or exceeded, mark the trigger as activated
Calculate the payout amount using the parametric payout formula specified in the policy (typically a linear or step function of index exceedance)
Initiate the payout process by notifying the claims or finance system with the trigger data, index value, and calculated payout amount for payment to the insured
Retain a complete audit trail of the data source query, raw response, trigger evaluation logic, and payout initiation for each measurement period
Known gotchas
Basis risk — the difference between actual insured loss and the parametric payout — is inherent to parametric products; the trigger index and measurement station must be specified and agreed in the policy, and cannot be changed post-bind even if a closer station becomes available
Weather data sources must be specified as an agreed third-party authority in the policy; if the specified data source is unavailable at measurement time, the policy should define a fallback authority or dispute resolution process
Regulatory treatment of parametric products varies by state; some states require parametric triggers to meet specific indemnity or loss verification standards — confirm regulatory classification before issuing
