Steps

  1. Identify each column splice location on the erection drawings and confirm whether a splice plate, erection seat, or diaphragm plate is detailed to temporarily support the upper column section during alignment.
  2. Provide a safe means of access to the splice elevation (e.g., a personnel platform, ladder attached to the column, or aerial lift) rather than free-climbing the column to reach the splice.
  3. Use taglines to control the upper column section during the pick and guide it onto the erection aid/seat before releasing hand-guiding proximity to the connection.
  4. Confirm the splice connection reaches the erector's required minimum bolting/welding per the erection drawings before the crane releases the load line, consistent with the general beam/column connection-securing principle in 1926.756(a).
  5. Coordinate temporary guying or bracing at the splice tier consistent with the site-specific erection plan so the upper column section is stable independent of the crane before final bolt-up.
