Steps Go to the EIA Open Data page and register for a free API key; EIA emails the key to the address provided. Build requests against the v2 base URL, appending your api_key as a query parameter. Request a parent route without /data to discover its child routes and available facets/frequency options. Add /data to the route once you've identified the right dataset, and specify one or more data[] columns to receive values. Use facets[...] parameters to filter (e.g., by state or sector) and a frequency parameter to set periodicity. Known gotchas Omitting /data from the route returns metadata about the route, not actual data values — a common mistake when first exploring. A single request is capped at 5,000 rows of JSON output; use the offset parameter to paginate larger result sets. Legacy APIv1 series IDs only work if invoked through the special /v2/seriesid/{ID} route, not as a plain query parameter.
