Documented steps
For relative recency, set "search_recency_filter" to one of "hour", "day", "week", "month", "year" (https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/sonar/filters); use "hour" for breaking-news-style freshness.
For an explicit publish-date range, set "search_after_date_filter" and/or "search_before_date_filter" using the exact format %m/%d/%Y, e.g. "3/1/2025".
For content recently edited/updated (rather than originally published), use "last_updated_after_filter" / "last_updated_before_filter" in the same MM/DD/YYYY format.
Do not combine search_recency_filter with the explicit date filters in the same request — the docs state recency and date filters cannot be combined.
Note that search_mode: "academic" ignores date filters entirely, so don't rely on date filters for academic-mode searches (https://docs.perplexity.ai/docs/sonar/filters).

Known gotchas
Date format is strictly MM/DD/YYYY (%m/%d/%Y), not ISO 8601 — an ISO date string will not parse as documented.
search_recency_filter and the explicit date filters are mutually exclusive per the docs; combining them is unsupported.
search_mode: "academic" silently ignores date filters, so agents filtering academic queries by date need a different strategy.
