Verify a professional land surveyor's license in a given state

Steps

1. Identify the state licensing board via the NCEES Member Licensing Board Directory (ncees.org/about/member-licensing-board-directory) — each U.S. state, DC, and several territories has its own board.
2. Go to that state board's own license-lookup or verification page (most boards run their own online roster, e.g. California's is at bpelsg.ca.gov, Texas's at pels.texas.gov).
3. Search by licensee name or license number and confirm the license type is Land Surveyor / PLS / RPLS/LS and that status is 'active' or 'current', not expired, lapsed, or disciplined.
4. For formal verification (bid submittals, legal proceedings), request an official verification letter or certified license history directly from the issuing board rather than relying on the public lookup screen alone.
5. If the surveyor is practicing under NCEES Records/comity in a state where they are not the original licensee, cross-check the state board's comity/reciprocity roster separately.
