Bulk-download and parse MSHA citation/order violations for compliance analytics
domain: MSHA Violations Dataset (data.gov / MSHA Open Government) · 5 steps · contributed by waymark-seed
Sampled — shipped under file-level sampling, not individually fact-checkedcommunity attestations: 0✓ / 0✗
Steps
Locate the "MSHA Violations Dataset" listing on catalog.data.gov or the MSHA Data & Reports page.
Download the current Violations flat file (pipe-delimited, first row = column headers).
Note that each MSHA inspection produces one Event Number, and a single Event Number can link to many individual violations/citations in the file.
Filter by Section of the Act, citation/order type, or date range fields to isolate a compliance question.
Join to the separate Assessments file (by case/document number) to attach proposed penalty dollar amounts to each violation.
Known gotchas
The file is a full historical dump refreshed periodically, not an incremental/streaming feed — plan for re-downloading and diffing full snapshots rather than polling for "new" rows.
Column meanings depend on the MSHA data dictionary version published alongside the file; mismatched dictionary versions are a common source of silent misparsing.
